“In God We Trust” became the national motto of the United States in 1956. While this was likely a response to the Soviet Union which promoted atheism, the origins of our motto go back to the War of 1812, if not farther. In the fourth stanza of Francis Scott Key’s “The Star-Spangled Banner,” he wrote, “And this be our motto: 'In God is our Trust.'"
Regardless of the origins, it is a good motto for a nation and for followers of Jesus. Psalm 9:10 states, “And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.” There is a direct correlation between knowing God and trusting God. This is why the enemy works so hard to misalign God’s character and to keep us from truly knowing Him. God desires for us to trust Him in every aspect of our lives. This is part of the Faith Adventure. Keep pursuing Him. Don’t Give Up!
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
